Oenotrichia macgillivrayi is an endemic terrestrial fern from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the center of Grande Terre. It grows in dense humid forest and edges on volcano-sedimentary substrate around 800 m asl. Main threats to this species are animal invasives that cause habitat degradation, as well as clearing of the Dogny hiking track. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are both 12 km², and the number of locations is estimated at three. Therefore, O. macgillivrayi is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v).

Geographical area

O. macgillivrayi is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the center of Grande Terre: Oui-Poin, Dogny and an ancient observation at Table Unio.

Population

Population size is unknown, but field observation indicate that it may be declining.

Habitat

This terrestrial fern grows in high elevation dense humid forest (and edges) on volcano-sedimentary substrate around 800 m asl.

Threats

Main threats to this species are invasive species that cause habitat degradation, mostly rusa deer (Rusa timorensis), as well as clearing of the Dogny hiking track.

Conservation

O. macgillivrayi is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and does not occur in any protected areas. This species should urgently be protected and taken into account when maintaining and clearing the Dogny tracks, where several individuals have already been cut. Prospection should also be conducted on Table Unio, where this species has not been observed in over a century.
