Elaphoglossum huerlimannii is a small endemic fern from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the northeast of Grande Terre, from Mt. Panié to Mt. Mandjélia. It occurs in dense shady humid forest, on rocky riverbanks on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 600 to 1,300 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 56 and 16 km², respectively. Even though this species is discreet and little known, its habitat is well preserved and itdoes not seem threatened at the moment. Therefore, E. huerlimannii is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


E. huerlimannii is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the northeast of Grande Terre, from Mt. Panié to Mt. Mandjélia.

Population


Total population size is unknown. Observations and collections are scarce, but indicate there could be several thousands of mature individuals (CI & Dayu Biik 2018).

Habitat


This small fern (less than 10 cm) has been observed in dense shady humid forest, on rocky riverbanks on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 600 to 1,300 m asl.

Threats


No threats have been identified to this day (CI & Dayu Biik 2018). However, this species could be impacted by climate change in the future.

Conservation


Unprotected by legislation in New Caledonia, this species occurs in one protected area : mount Panié reserve.
