Greslania montana is an endemic bambou from New Caledonia, where it is known from two subpopulations at Thio : Mont Pouéari and Nekando. It occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate at 1,140 m asl. This species is not threatened at the moment, but as it occurs in a restricted area at high altitudes, it could be impacted by climate change in the future, although the exact timescale and extent of impact are uncertain. Therefore, Greslania montana is precautionarily listed as Near Threatened (NT), approaching the threshold for Vulnerable under criterion D2.

This species is not threatened at the moment, but as it occurs in one locality at high altitudes, it could be impacted by climate change in the future, although the exact timescale and extent of impact are uncertain.
Conservation
Greslania montana is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in two protected areas : Forêt de Saille and Mont Humboldt. It is recommanded to collect fertile species to better estimate its population size. There can be a confusion to identify the species when it is not fertile. Therefore, taxonomonic studies is needed to identify criteria that may help identify a non fertile species.
