Microstegium glabratum is an autochtonous herb from New Caledonia. It is known from four subpopulations : Tibaondio, Nessakouya, Hte Boghen et Col d'Amieu. This species occurs in forest edges up to 400 m asl, mainly along river banks, in volcano-sedimentary and sometimes on serpentine substrates. The main threats to this species are invasive species (Rusa deer, Rusa timorensis) where it is potentially directly consummed. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 267 and 16 km², respectively, and the number of locations is estimated to be four. Therefore, Microstegium glabratum is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+B2ab(ii,iii,v), with a continuous decline in the AOO, quality of habitat and number of mature individuals.

Microstegium glabratum is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in one protected area : Parc des Grandes Fougères. It is recommended to pursue the search of the species.
