An endemic orchid of New Caledonia, Gunnarella florenciae is known from Grande Terre from Dzumac to Tango. G. florenciae is a species of mid-altitude dense humid forest. Population size is not precisely known but considering the great rarity of G. florenciae, and the small number of mature individuals per site, the total population size is estimated around 1,000 mature individuals. Using criterion D, G. florenciae is considered Near Threatened close to (VU) D1.

Gunnarella florenciae is protected by legislation in Province Nord. This species is found in one protected area in Province Sud: Réserve Naturelle de la Haute Dumbéa.
