Pandanus verecundus is an endemic small tree of New Caledonia, restricted to the southern part of Grande Terre. It occurs in humid forest on ultramafic soils up to 260 m asl. Its area of occupancy (AOO) is equal to 16 km² for an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 42 km² with an estimation of tree locations. The combined threats of fire and the major threat of mining activities of Goro (Vale NC), allows us to infer a continuous decline of AOO, EOO, quality of habitat, number of locations and number of mature individuals. Using criteria B, P. verecundus qualifies for Endangered (EN) B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v).

Habitat
P. verecundus occurs in humid forest on ultramafic soils up to 260 m asl.
Threats
The main threats identified are the ongoing mining activity of Goro (Vale Inco) and the bushfires.
Conservation
Pandanus verecundus is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud. It does not occur in any protected areas. This species is part of a rescue program implemented by the mining actor Vale NC where some of them (133 plants) have been planted at the Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue. It is recommended to carry on efforts to save this species: population follow-up and protection, ex-situ conservation.
