Diospyros oubatchensis is an endemic tree/small tree of New Caledonia, spread in central and north-east Grande Terre. Diospyros oubatchensis occurs in dense humid forest at mid and high altitude (600 - 1,250 m asl) on volcano-sedimentary substrate. This species does not seem directly threatened. Diospyros oubatchensis is considered Least Concern (LC).

This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord but not in Province Sud. It is known of two protected areas : Mont Panié, Aoupinié
