Elaeocarpus vieillardii var. vieillardii is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the northeastern mountain range of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil up to 540 m asl. Known from 2 locations, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 431 and 12 km², respectively. The main threats are bushfires and invasive species, that cause habitat degradation. Therefore, E. vieillardii var. vieillardii is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+B2ab(iii,v).

Geographical area


E. vieillardii var. vieillardii is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the northeastern mountain range of Grande Terre: from Col d'Amos (Ouégoa) to the base of Mont Panié (Hienghène).

Population


Population size is unknown.

Habitat


E. vieillardii var. vieillardii occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil up to 540 m asl.

Threats


The main threats are bushfires and invasive species (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa)), that cause habitat degradation.

Conservation


This taxon is protected by legislation in Province Nord, but does not occur in any protected areas. The local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort should be informed about the presence of the taxon in the concerned areas. Further prospection in the northeastern mountain range is also recommended (Diahoué area for instance).
