Near Threatened (NT) , assessed in 08/09/2017

Oxera glandulosa is a slender liana endemic to New Caledonia, with a scattered distribution in the center and the southern part of Grande Terre and the Isle of Pines (Ile des Pins). It occurs in dense humid forest or scrubland on ultramafic substrate up to 600 m asl. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are estimated to be 80 and 5,580 km², respectively, and it is known from more than ten locations. Although bushfires are known to impact this species and contribute to the decline of habitat quality, good natural regeneration has been observed. Therefore, O. glandulosa does not seem directly threatened, and is listed as Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii).

Geographical area

O. glandulosa is endemic to New Caledonia, with a scattered distribution in the center and the southern part of Grande Terre, as well as Ile des Pins.

Population

Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate this species has small populations with good regeneration capcity (observed in Kuebini, in non-disturbed forest).

Habitat

O. glandulosa is found in dense humid forest or scrubland on ultramafic substrate up to 600 m asl.

Threats

This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be locally impacted by fires and thus contribute to the decline of the habitat quality.

Conservation

This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in one protected area: Parc de la Rivière Bleue. This species is cultivated at the IAC (Institut Agronomique de Nouvelle-Calédonie) nursery of Saint-Louis with only a few number of individuals.
