Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 26/01/2018Syzygium ngoyense is an endemic subshrub of New Caledonia restricted to the south of the Grande Terre. This species is quite common and it occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate up to 800 m asl. Despite having an area of occupancy and an extent of occurrence equal to 152 and 3,631 km² respectively, S. ngoyense has no apparent threat, and is not thought to approach the requirements for listing as threatened. It is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
S. ngoyense is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the south of the Grande Terre with a small extension in Vallée de Thio and Poro.
Population
Population size is unknown but based on field observations, it is a common species.
Habitat
S. ngoyense occurs in shrubland and transitional vegetation on ultramafic substrate up to 800 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires, myrtle rust (Austropuccinia psidii), observed on the road towards the Neocallitropsis refuge) and mining activities at Goro.
Conservation
S. ngoyense is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in several protected areas: la Dumbéa, Chutes de la Madeleine, Montagne des sources, Haute Yaté, Haute Dumbéa, Barrage de Yaté, Pic du grand Kaori and Rivière bleue. This species is cultivated in ex situ therefore it is suggested to promote its growing in nurseries.
