Geographical area

Exocarpos clavatus is an endemic shrub restricted to the south of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. It is known of 3 subpopulations (Kouakoué, Montagne des Sources, Mamié-mont Naoué). It is noted as well in réserve of Mont Humboldt.

Population

Population size is unknown.

Habitat

It is found in humid forest on an ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 400-1,100 m asl.

Threats

This species does not seem directly threatened because its habitat quality is overall good. However, the 2005 forest fire which devastated the Montagne des Sources very likely impacted a sub-population.

Conservation

Exocarpos clavatus is protected by legislation in province Nord but not in province Sud. It occurs in several protected areas : réserve naturelle du massif du Kouakoué, réserve naturelle de la Montagne des Sources and it has been noted in réserve naturelle du mont Humboldt. It would be worth prospecting Montagne des Sources to collect recent material.
