Planchonella reticulata is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution in the south and east coast of Grande Terre, as well as the Isle of Pines. It grows in dense humid forest and shrubland on ultramafic substrate up to 960 m asl. The main threats to this species are bushfires and mining activities. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 4,675 and 180 km², respectively, and the number of locations is estimated to be higher than ten. Therefore, P. reticulata is listed as Near Threatened (NT), close to Vulnerable under criteria B1ab(ii,iii,iv,v)+B2ab(ii,iii,iv,v).

Geographical area


P. reticulata is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution on the southern ultramafic massif of Grande Terre and the east coast, from Goro to Tontouta and from Canala to Poro, as well as the Isle of Pines.

Population size is unknown.

Habitat


This shrub grows in shrubland ('maquis') and dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate up to 960 m asl.

Threats


The main threat to this species is posed by bushfires and mining activities (Kouaoua, Tontouta, Goro).

Conservation


P. reticulata is protected by legislation in Province Nord, and it does occur in several protected areas: Massif du Kouakoué, Barrage de Yaté, Forêt Cachée, Pic du Pin and Pic du grand Kaori natural reserves, as well as the Côte Oubliée provincial park.
