An endemic orchid of New Caledonia, Octarrhena saccolabioides is known only from Mont Panié. This species was also collected at Presqu'île de Bogota but herbarium materials was not sufficient to confirm this location. O. saccolabioides occurs in humid forest at around 940 m asl. This species is quite rare, with only one mature individual found at Mont Panié and it grows on habitats potentially threatened by invasive species (Rusa timorensis and Sus crofa). Its area of occupancy and extent of occurrence are equal to 4 km². Therefore, O. saccolabioides is considered Critically endangered (CR) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+B2ab(iii,v);C2a(i,ii);D.
Geographical area
O. saccolabioides is an endemic orchid of New Caledonia only from Mont Panié. This species was also collected at Presqu'île de Bogota but herbarium materials was not sufficient to confirm this location.
Population
Population size is unknown but species seems to be quite rare, with only one mature individual found in Mont Panié.
Habitat
O. saccolabioides occurs in humid forest at around 940 m asl.
Threats
O. saccolabioides occurs in habitats potentientially threateend by invasive species (Rusa deer, Rusa timorensis and feral pigs, Sus scrofa).
Conservation
O. saccolabioides is protected by legislation in Province Sud and Province Nord. O. saccolabioides occurs in one protected area : réserve de nature sauvage du Mont Panié . Recent prospections at Bogota peninsula did not manage to relocate this species. Therefore, in order to have a better knowledge of its distribution, there is a need to rekindle prospections at Mont Panié. And it would be beneficial to O. saccolabioides to fence the viable population at Mont Panié and to set up a propagation program for ex-situ and in-situ conservation.
