It is quite common and is found in dense humid and gallery forests on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 300 to 1,200 m asl. It has an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) equal to 4,460 km² and a minimum Area of Occupancy (AOO) of 176 km², but it does not appear to be significantly threatened at the moment. Therefore, Oxera morierei is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area

O. morierei is endemic to New Caledonia largely distributed from the center to the northern part of Grande Terre.

Population

Population size is unknown but field observations indicate the species is relatively abundant.

Habitat

O. morierei occurs in dense humid forest and gallery forests on volcano-sedimentary substrate between 300 and 1,200 m asl.

Threats

This species is not threatened by bushfires. It could be impacted by Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa), which both can potentially impact the habitat quality. However due to its large distribution and abundance, this species does not appear to be threatened at the moment.

Conservation

This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in three protected areas: Parc des Grandes Fougères, Mont Panié and Aoupinié. This species is cultivated at the IAC (Institut Agronomique de Nouvelle-Calédonie) nursery of Saint-Louis with only a few number of individuals.
