Endangered (EN) , assessed in 25/06/2020

Phyllanthus guillauminii is a sub-shrub of 30-70 cm high, endemic of New Caledonia and restricted to the far north west of Grande Terre. This species is known from 2 subpopulations: Tiébaghi and Poum. This species occurs in maquis and in undergrowth forests on ultramafic substrates at an altitude range of 250 and 580 m asl. The total population size in unknown but it is estimated to be less than 250 mature individuals. The main identified threats are linked to habitat damage by uncontrolled bushfires and mining activities at Tiébaghi. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are respectively estimated to be of 40 km² and 32 km² while the number of locations is estimated to be 2. Using criterion B and with the estimation of a continuous decline of its habitat quality, EOO, AOO and number of mature individuals, Phyllanthus guillauminii is assessed as Endangered (EN) B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,v),C2a(i),D.

Conservation

Phyllanthus genus is protected by legislation in Province Nord. Phyllanthus guillauminii does not occur in any protected area. It is recommended to inform the DSCGR (emergency services), responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort on the presence of the species in the concerned areas. This species is cultivated by the SLN and was donated to the local association of mining heritage perservation of Tiébaghi. This association managed a delimited protected perimeters near the mining areas. In situ conservation efforts are recommended, in particular monitoring of known subpopulations and the preservation of a viable population within delimited perimeters. It would be moreover advised to preserve patches of humid forest within delimited perimeters where this species is known.
