Notelaea austrocaledonica var. badula is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia. It is restricted to the Grand Sud massif of Grande Terre, from the far south to Tontouta-Thio area. It is also present at Ile des Pins. This variety is very common in the south and it occurs in shrubland on serpentine substrate up to 900 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires but globally this variety does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 2,695 and 184 km², respectively. Therefore, Notelaea austrocaledonica var. badula is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
This variety is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the Grand Sud massif in the south of Grande Terre, from the far south to Tontouta-Thio area. It is also present at Ile des Pins.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is very common.
Habitat
This variety occurs in shrubland on serpentine substrate up to 900 m asl.
Threats
Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires but globally this variety does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
Notelaea austrocaledonica var. badula is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in numerous protected areas: Mont Humboldt, la Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, Haute Dumbéa, Chutes de la Madeleine, Côte Oubliée, Rivière bleue.
