Notelaea austrocaledonica var. austrocaledonica is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia. It is widely distributed across Grande Terre. This species also occurs on Yandé island and Ile des Pins. It occurs in shrubland on ultramafic and serpentine substrates up to 1,000 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires but globally this variety does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 19,451 and 552 km², respectively. Therefore, Notelaea austrocaledonica var. austrocaledonica is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Notelaea austrocaledonica var. austrocaledonica is endemic to New Caledonia where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. This variety also occurs on Yandé island and Ile des Pins.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this variety is very common.
Habitat
This variety occurs in shrubland on ultramafic and serpentine substrates up to 1,000 m asl.
Threats
Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires but globally this variety does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
Notelaea austrocaledonica var. austrocaledonica is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in numerous protected areas: Cap N'dua, Côte Oubliée, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, la Dumbéa, Montagne des sources, Mont Do, Mont Panié, Rivière bleue, Vallée de la Thy.
