Basselinia deplanchei is an endemic clustered, rarely solitary or branched, usually slender understory to emergent, shrubby tree palm present from south to east central of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. B.deplanchei occurs in low mountain forests and exposed open vegetation or near bare mountains slopes and hills in full sun on ultramafic substrate from 200-1,500m asl. The number of locations, based on mining acitivity as the main theart, is estimated to be 13 and field surveys report natural regeneration of the population. Therefore, B.deplanchei is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to Vulnerable (VU) B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with a decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.

Geographical area

Basselinia deplanchei is an endemic palm tree occuring in low mountain forests and exposed open vegetation from south to east central of Grand Terre in New Caledonia.

Population

Population size is unknown. It is known from 15-20 subpopulations.

Habitat

Basselini deplanchei occurs in low mountain forests and exposed open vegetation or near bare mountains slopes and hills in fulll sun on soils derived from ultramafic rocks from 200-1500m asl.

Threats

The species is not globally threatened. Main identified threats are linked to habitat damage by mining activity (Vulcain, Camp des sapins, Kouaoua, Tomo and Goro) and uncontrolled fires. This species may also be targetted by illegal collection (juvenile harvesting) as it is complicated to grow from seeds.

Conservation

Basseilinia deplanchei is protected by legislation in Province Nord. Basselinia deplanchei occurs in eleven protected areas : Parc de la Rivière Bleue, Mont Mou, Mont Humboldt, Mont Do, Montagne des Sources, Pic Ningua, Haute Yaté, Pic du Pin, Haute Pourina, Mont Panié, Massif du Kouakoué. It would be moreover advised to realize multiplication tests.
