Dendrobium cleistogamum is an endemic orchid of New Caledonia, mostly distributed on summits of the southern part of Grande Terre but also occurring in the north part in Tchingou and Paéoua. D. closterium is infeoded to high altitude humid forest. With an area of occupancy and an extent of occurrence equal to 72 and 4,653 km² respectively, D. closterium qualifies as Least Concern.

Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations report D. cleistogamum is not abundant by station.
Habitat
D. cleistogamum is infeoded to high altitude humid forest.
Menaces
There are no particular threats associated with this species.
Conservation
D. cleistogamum is protected in Province Nord and Province Sud. This species occurs in some protected areas : réserve naturelle de la forêt de Saille, réserve naturelle du Mont Humboldt, réserve naturelle du Mont Mou, réserve naturelle de la Haute Dumbéa, réserve naturelle de la Haute Yaté. D. closterium is a rare species. If the habitat quality deteriorates, its extinction risk should be quiclky reassessed.
