Lethedon microphylla, distributed along the northwestern coast of New Caledonia and Ile Yande, is very likely a synonym of the widespread, mostly coastal species L. salicifolia because material from near the syntype locality of L. microphylla(e.g., MacKee 28519, MO!, see images on Tropicos) is an almost perfect match with the two syntypes of L. sphaerocarpa, which come from the opposite side of the island. L. sphaerocarpa is also only tentatively maintained as distinct from the commonly collected and highly variable L. salicifolia.
